Why are gas prices so high?

Why are gas prices so high compared to say 1995. I realize that gas cost around $1.15 per gallon on average then. But adjusted for inflation that comes to around $1.70 now. Gas used to be something people could afford and people drove sometimes just for enjoyment to relax. Now it seems like driving is becoming a luxury for those us not so well off.
