Tenants rights to heating, repair time of boiler and compensation?

My boiler broke down on friday night and I contacted my landlord straight away. He was pretty good (for once) and made a engineer in to look at it sunday morning. The enginneer said that the boiler is dead, and that the boiler is also installed incorrectly. What confuses me is that our landlord had it checked in september and everything was fine?!
Does anybody know my rights to heating within a rented accomodation, how quickly the landlord should get the boiler replaced and if I can claim any compensation from him for running an electric heater?
Also, is there any avenue to look into about the boiler check from september?
I have been on time with my rent every months for 26 months and my contract lasts till at least september.
