Is painting a solid oak desk black an act of vandalism?

I bought an ancient desk on eBay with the intention of painting it with black semi-gloss. The desk has turned legs, beautiful drawer handles and a lot of carved detail. I had assumed it would be pine, but it's solid oak. Is it an act of vandalism to paint solid oak black?
